Tretyakov Gallery; Moscow

Housed in a distinctive fairy-tale-like building in Moscow, the State Tretyakov Gallery is the foremost museum of Russian art and one of the most important cultural institutions in Russia. From Merchant Collection to National Museum

The origins of the Tretyakov Gallery lie in the personal collection of the Moscow merchant and philanthropist Pavel Tretyakov. In 1856, Tretyakov began acquiring works by contemporary Russian artists with the ambitious goal of creating a public museum devoted entirely to national art.

Over the following decades, he assembled an extraordinary collection that included portraits, historical paintings, landscapes, and genre scenes by many of Russia’s leading painters. Tretyakov believed that art should be accessible to the public, and he gradually opened his home and galleries to visitors, allowing the growing collection to be viewed long before it officially became a state museum.

A Gift to the City of Moscow

By the late 19th century, Tretyakov’s collection had grown so significantly that it required specially designed exhibition spaces. In 1892, he formally donated both the collection and the gallery buildings to the city of Moscow. The institution was thereafter known as the Moscow City Gallery of Pavel and Sergei Tretyakov, honoring both Pavel and his brother, Sergei Tretyakov, who had also contributed works of art.

The gallery quickly became a central institution for Russian culture, preserving works that documented the artistic achievements of the nation during a period of profound cultural transformation.

The Iconic Façade and Expanding Collections

At the beginning of the 20th century, the gallery acquired its now-iconic façade, designed by the painter Viktor Vasnetsov. Inspired by traditional Russian architecture and folklore, the colorful entrance gave the museum a distinctive national character that reflected the spirit of the collection within.

Throughout the 20th century, the museum’s holdings expanded considerably through state acquisitions and transfers from other institutions. The Tretyakov Gallery eventually grew into a vast complex of buildings, including new spaces dedicated to modern Russian and Soviet art.

A Treasury of Russian Art

Today, the Tretyakov Gallery remains the most important museum devoted to the history of Russian art. Its collection includes medieval icons, masterpieces of 18th- and 19th-century painting, and works by leading artists associated with movements such as Realism and the Russian avant-garde.
