A steadfast advocate for painting outdoors (en plein air), Monet dedicated his career to capturing the fleeting effects of natural light and atmosphere. He is renowned for his series of paintings, in which he depicted subjects like grainstacks, Rouen Cathedral, and his water lilies under varying conditions throughout the day.
