Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was a celebrated Austrian Symbolist painter and a leading figure of the Vienna Secession movement. Initially trained as an academic architectural decorator, Klimt developed a highly personal and eclectic style that blended decorative patterns with erotic and allegorical subject matter. His “Golden Phase” produced some of art history’s most iconic paintings, including The Kiss (1907-08).
