Its dramatic history is deeply intertwined with the fate of the nation itself, and today it is renowned for housing two of the world’s most significant masterpieces: Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine and Rembrandt van Rijn’s Landscape with the Good Samaritan.

A Patriotic Beginning

The museum’s collection dates back to 1801, when Izabela Czartoryska, a Polish aristocrat and patriot, opened the first publicly available collection of art and national memorabilia in the town of Puławy. In the spirit of the era, her collection was eclectic, featuring masterpieces of European art alongside historical relics, antiquities, and curiosities from the Far East, all intended to preserve and celebrate Polish heritage.

A Collection in Exile

The museum’s history took a dramatic turn following the November Uprising of the 1830s. Due to the Czartoryski family’s patriotic activities, their property was confiscated by the ruling powers. A significant portion of the precious collection was saved only through the heroic efforts of the duchess, her staff, and the local population, who hid the works. In the 1840s, the rescued collection was transported to the Hôtel Lambert in Paris, where it was exhibited to the public to draw Europe’s attention to the plight of a partitioned Poland. In the second half of the 19th century, the collection finally returned to Poland, where it was installed in a new museum in Kraków established by Prince Władysław Czartoryski, the founder’s grandson.

A National Treasure

Today, the collections of the Princes Czartoryski Museum are considered an integral part of Polish and European heritage. Housed within the beautiful Princes Czartoryski Palace, which retains the special character of a historical gallery, the museum attracts visitors from all over the world. While the collection is vast, it is the presence of Leonardo’s singular portrait and Rembrandt’s powerful landscape that cements its status as one of the world’s most important cultural institutions.

Commissioned by Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan, Lady with an Ermine is a celebrated Renaissance portrait painted by Leonardo da Vinci around 1489–1490.
